You kidding, this book can be read for anyone over ten. Being a child of the 70s I grew up with the Amazing Mr. Blunden and I am huge fan of the film. It is only now, as a 46 year old man, that I decided to read The Ghosts. Beautifully written story, that is both fantasy adventure and one of the best examples of a parallel universe and time paradox without getting too lost in the complexity of it all.

To give huge credit to Lionel In the preface it states "For readers of ten, eleven and twelve". To give huge credit to Lionel Jeffries, he directed the book pretty much. Some of the choices the film makes in fleshing out Mrs. Wickens's motivations and dropping the final act with Jamie are for the better.

Jefferies also placed the time of Lucy and Jamie further back than in the book. In the film they are in the Victorian times, around the turn of the century, while in the book it read they are from the 60s the time book was written.

Personally I prefer the Victorian time setting as it adds another level of mystery in that time travel is not always contemporary the here and now but at a time in the past when people believed more in magical things and the supernatural. I like the fact the story had already happened before we were born - similar to how Lucy and Jamie ended up in a time before they were born. That is not to take away the enjoyment of the source material as the book is simply wonderful. When reading the book, I had Laurence Naismith in mind throughout.

He IS Mr. Utterly adore the film of this featuring Laurence Naismith as the eponymous Mr Blunden. Actually a re-read from childhood and the differences between the original novel and wonderful film are interesting in that Barber's tale is firmly set in the present rather than the Edwardian era, but one would imagine that the charm of the previous 'Railway Children' both films are adapted and directed by Lionel Jefferies set the precedent for this decision.

Nevertheless, both versions work. Mr Blunden is equally contrite, Georgie equally irritating, Sara equally caring, Jamie equally brave although this incarnation of Lucy is reduced to rather a subservient character, forever adoring of her brother. A story of redemption and forgiveness and one happily rediscovered during packing for a house move; the perfect antidote for a forest of packing boxes.
