Onkyo tx-sr607 how to setup 5.1
The more I used the Onkyo, coupled with a thorough reading of the user manual, the more I understood the available options and settings. By the end of that period my familiarity with the unit enabled me to understand how to get the most out of it.
Here are some examples of the early and comically incorrect impressions I had after just hooking up the Onkyo receiver and their corresponding solutions after I read through the manual:.
Making all of the connections was very straightforward with the TX-SR The back panel was laid out efficiently and all of my interconnects and speaker cables fell into place nicely. For this review I removed my dedicated amplifier and ran the TX-SR as a full receiver, rather than as a preamplifier. With my 4-ohm main speakers and 6-ohm center and surrounds, this provided at least W per channel to all speakers based on the FTC rating, most likely with two-channels driven.
Non-directional mono elements of a mix are fed to these height speakers, to enhance presence, depth and airiness, adding a vertical dimension to the soundstage.
The value of this codec is debatable. From where I sit, it adds precisely nothing to the Onkyo's appeal. I found it works with some material featuring a strong mono element, falling rain for example, but without properly encoded source material the effect is inconsistent, and ultimately fails to do what its says on the tin, namely provide a meaningful height dimension to the listening experiences.
Elsewhere, the TX-SR includes various acoustic modes re-purposed to ostensibly enhance the gaming experience. The SR's multi-room support more an American enticement I think is modest. There is no video feed in the second room, but different sources can be selected for each of the two zones.
The conventional analogue inputs are less exciting. There are more than enough of them to cope with most big, well-endowed systems, but a couple of omissions point to where Onkyo has saved a few quid. S-video has kicked the bucket, too. Onkyo's propaganda also talks of improved build quality and a new visual design, though this model crams a lot of buttons onto its front panel, in an arrangement that can only be described as artless, and is far from easy to get to grips with without the remote control.
And, unless I'm missing something, it looks alarmingly like the Onkyo SR And the SR A few millimetres have been shaved off the depth, however, and it's lost half a kilo in weight. Two different listening modes. In an actual listening room, you'd find that some speakers play louder than others when fed the same amount of power.
In equal power mode, you'll hear these differences in loudness as they naturally occur between speakers. In equal volume mode, we've made the loudness of each speaker about the same. This gives you a more direct comparison of subtle voicing differences between speakers. Nothing beats listening to speakers in your space. SpeakerCompare gives you a sense of the sonic differences. But performance in the real world is affected by the acoustics of your car or home, your choice of amplification, and your source material.
